Even Weddings Need Context Clues

Remember when I said Sister2 is getting married?

I don't really need to explain that it's super exciting, and my family is all wrapped up in wedding planning and discussion.  My father, in particular, has taken a surprising amount of interest in the ceremony.  I could have sworn he's never thought about this before, but now that it's happening, he's pretty much taken over and is rampaging all over it.

Anyway, that's not really the point of this post.  And I think he and Sister2 have worked out a compromise.  But we were having one of these discussions, and then he turned to me.  "Poco, since we're discussing this I have something to say to you, too."  (My father has bizarre nicknames for us.  Mine is Poco.  Sister2 and 3's are worse.)

This was unexpected, seeing as I am not even engaged, and I braced myself for some wacky attempt to seize control over a future ceremony not yet in the works.  Instead he said, "You need to give me a least a year before you get married.  For my wallet to recover."  After a pause he added, "Unless you want to make it a dual."

Not understanding what he meant, I said, "Between you and [Significant]?"

Everyone laughed and looked confused.

I, confused by their confusion elaborated, "Well, we've got swords at home, so I don't see why not.  But I don't think it's going to help at all."

The laughter intensified and then somebody sputtered out, "Dual wedding.  Not duel."

And that is why I should have paid more attention to context clues when they taught it in 6th grade.

Have you ever had a miscommunication by using the wrong word?  Does your significant other have swords?

  1. Hahahaha I'd take a couple of years happily! We do not own swords, but if we did I'd be the duel queen!

  2. Haha! Yes, dual makes more sense, but in your defense a "duel" could have also fit.

Talk to me! I'm friendly. I won't bite.
